Custom fountain pens
turned on our lathe
A pen commission at Smart Paper Craft means the barrel is cut for your hand, the nib is tuned for your writing, and nothing ships until it performs. Made in Parrearra from $320.
What a commission covers
Every build starts with a ten-minute brief — grip size, preferred weight, the ink you actually reach for. Then a raw ebonite rod or timber blank goes on the lathe and becomes a barrel balanced for your hand, not a generic one.
Each pen leaves numbered, test-written for two days and packed with a bench card listing its materials and service schedule. Bring it back any time — the number tells us everything.
- Barrel cut to your grip measurement, not a stock size
- JoWo #6 nib tuned on our 160gsm test paper
- Serial number and a lifetime service path
- Photos of your actual blank before we cut it
Pen pricing, no surprises
Standard commission
Ebonite or native timber barrel, JoWo steel nib, hand polish, bench card.
Premium commission
Rare resins or stacked celluloid, metal accent bands, gold nib option, story card.
Bench shelf pens
Finished pens already on the shelf — same tuning standard, ships in 48h.
Engraving adds $15. Solid gold nibs are quoted per build. Full list on the price page.
Six steps from brief to box
You'll get bench photos at every stage — most clients tell us that's their favourite part of the wait.
The brief
Ten minutes over email or phone. Grip, weight, inks, deadline — and honest advice if a cheaper route fits you better.
Material pick
We photograph real ebonite rods and timber blanks from current stock. You choose the actual piece, not a category.
Turn and cure
About 40 minutes on the lathe per pen, then resins cure for 48–72 hours before polishing. No skipping the cure.
Nib work
Your nib is mounted, flushed and tuned — smooth on 160gsm, adjusted for your preferred flow.
Two-day test
We write with it. Sentences, circles, fast notes. A pen that skips under real use goes back to the mat, not the box.
Signed and shipped
Serial number assigned, bench card written, tracked post for a flat $12 Australia-wide.

Hands on the lathe
Two people touch every commission — the one who turns it and the one who checks it before it ships.
