Gifting a leather journal:
sizes, paper and personalisation
A journal is the rare gift that gets more personal the more it's used — if you pick the right one. A quick guide to sizes, rulings and the personalisation choices that turn a nice present into a kept one.
Size is a habit question, not a gift question
A6 pocket size fits bags and jacket pockets — for the person who jots everywhere. A5 is the classic journal size, comfortable for desk writing and the right pick when you're unsure. B5 is for sketchers, guest books and people who think in spreads.
Buy for how they write, not how the journal looks wrapped. An A6 gifted to a spread-thinker sits unused, beautifully.
Lined, blank or dot grid
Lined for writers and diarists. Blank for sketchers, mind-mappers and people who draw diagrams in margins. Dot grid — the bullet-journal standard — for organisers and habit trackers.
Not sure? Dot grid is the diplomatic answer: visible enough to guide, faint enough to ignore.
The best journal gift isn't the most expensive size — it's the one that matches how they actually write.
Kangaroo or cowhide
Kangaroo leather is the premium option — thinner, lighter and tougher gram for gram. It takes embossing crisply and ages to a beautiful sheen. Cowhide is thicker, warmer in the hand and kinder to the budget. Both outlive the recipient's interest in most things they own.
Colour matters less than people think — tan and mid-brown are chosen in 7 out of 10 orders because they hide wear honestly.
The personalisation bit
Embossing is where the gift lands. Initials are classic; a short inside joke or date is better. Blind emboss (no foil) ages into the leather subtly; gold or silver foil announces itself. Either way, we send a mock-up photo before cutting.
Add a hand-lettered gift card and it's done — see gift sets for the boxed options, or order a journal and add embossing at checkout.
The gift shelf
Wrapped sets waiting for collection — embossing checked twice, always.
